Originally the Chapel was dedicated to St John the Baptist but it is now dedicated to St Michael. There was a small St Michael's Chapel just 50 yards away. It was in a state of disrepair for centuries, and was demolished in the 19th century, when the title was incorporated with St John the Baptist and St John's Chapel was renamed St Michael within the Walls.
