The 1882 Ordnance Survey map shows this thoroughfare as the New North Road, so the "New" moniker is now fairly old. There is a curious asymmetry to the carriageways here with three southbound lanes including a bus and taxi one, but only one northbound. One has to assume that the evening northbound rush hour traffic is spread out over a greater period of time than the more concentrated morning southbound traffic so that only one lane can be justified.
