Former Village Street

Up to 1876 the village street left the Lewes-Newhaven Road via its current northern exit then turned south along this route before heading east from where the photographer is located. This route took the public byway past the front door of the manor and desiring more privacy the then owners rerouted the village street past the church and round the rear of their buildings. This lane is now a private road. The flint barns belong to Iford Farm whilst the building beyond is Sutton Cottages, the heavily altered former 17th century manor house converted to labourers cottages in the 1830s when the new one was constructed.
