The Border Counties Railway http://www.northumbrian-railways.co.uk/index.php?page=border-counties from Hexham to Riccarton Junction in Roxburgh opened in 1862, primarily to facilitate the transport of minerals from the North Tyne valley. It was never a great success, and finally closed completely in 1963. Two of the old railway bridges can be seen at Chollerton - this one over the road to Bingfield, and another which straddles the A6079 a short way to the north.
