According to a nearby sign this widening of the River Avon has long been an aquatic playground for natives (of Stratford-upon-Avon) and visitors alike. In the mid 1930s diving boards, a chute, changing huts and a floating safety boom were installed. Bathing suits were offer for hire (wholesale gentlemen's £1:6:0d (£1.30) per dozen and ladies' £1:12:6d (£1.625)). Those facilities survived the war but in the 1950s whispers of polio brought about their demise.
