The Old Grammar School - Wimborne Minster

The former Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School is an imposing Tudor style building completed in 1851. Grade II Listed. It was originally founded in the will of Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, when she established a chantry in the town in 1497. Adequate funds for the grammar school were lost however after the suppression of the chantries by Edward VI, and only re-established later after representations were made to Queen Elizabeth I. She granted a charter in 1563 for the establishment of a corporation of 12 governors to run the town, together with the new grammar school which was named after her. Image
