The Pressed Steel plant was one of the first major employers to come to the town as the railway works declined. Here car bodies were made mainly for BMC at Cowley and Longbridge. The 'just in time' method of production was many years away, so unpainted car body shells had to be stored in less than ideal conditions before being sent on to Cowley.
