Dating from 1840, this was the lodge or gatehouse for Spring Villa, a mansion built by merchant John Hudson. Hudson was an importer of leeches and sponges (large leech ponds are shown near the house on the 1853 OS plan). He sold the house to his son in 1856. Spring Villa survived until 1910 when the estate was developed for its current residential use.
