Dipsacus fullonum. This biennial plant has an inordinate number of common names:- Adam's flannel, barber's brushes, carde thistle, church brooms, clothes brush, gypsy's comb, hutton weed, Indian thistle, prickly back, shepherd's rod, shepherd's staff, Venus' basin, Venus' bath, Venus' cup, water thistle, wild teasel, wood broom, crib y pannwr. It is a useful food source for goldfinches. And I believe Alison Uttley's Squirrel used them to brush her tail.
