On Hope Street. Despite the name board, this is not what it seems - the real shop was at 57 St Vincent Street. It is in fact a bar and restaurant - with a bookish theme. John Smith & Son (Glasgow) Ltd was established in 1742 and is the oldest bookselling company in the English-speaking world. The retail business closed in 2000 and today the company only continues to trade as an academic bookseller, as part of the JS Group.
