Linking North Street to St John's Hill, the road was developed around 1820 and named after the former town brook which ran to the immediate north. Originally the medieval town wall was located on the southern but this had disappeared by the time of the original development and was lined with cottages. These were removed in 1962 and the area between here and Spring Gardens to the south became a large car park. This may well go when the former ironworks site is redeveloped in the future.
