This alleyway leads to the area once known as McGill's Yard, one of a number of similar nearby yards including Old Gaol Yard, Curry’s Yard and Whalebone Yard. Many of the names of the numerous yards in Morpeth relate to the activities and businesses that were operating at this time, such as King’s Head Yard, Turk’s Head Yard and George and Dragon Yard, whilst others relate to the names of residents, like Wigham’s Yard, Scott’s Yard, Fawcett’s Yard, Duncan’s Yard and, of course, this particular one McGill's Yard. At the time of the 1901 census there were still houses within McGill's Yard.
