Former Custom House

Formerly occupied by a bank branch, this was built in about 1820/1835 'in the style of Archibald Simpson'. See https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/apex/f?p=1505:300:::::VIEWTYPE,VIEWREF:designation,LB31873 for some additional details. We wondered whether the curved wall on the pavement corner which conceals the steps up to, and obstructs the view of, the main entrance, was original, or whether it had been added later as a nod to early 'elfansafety'. The ground floor room, which now showcases properties for sale, has elaborate plaster cornices and pillars with Corinthian capitals.
