The church was built for the Clifford family as a family chapel at Tixall Hall between 1827 and 1829. The architect was Joseph Ireland (c. 1780 - 1841). It was moved to Great Haywood in 1845 after the Tixall estate was sold. The church is grade II listed. The presbytery on the right is attached to the church, but is not included in the listing.
