This street runs alongside the River Tyne and has been occupied since Roman times. It was named for the sandhill which was at the rivers edge here. Gradually reclaimed during the middle ages, by the 16th century many prominent merchants lived here. The black and white building along the street is The Bessie Surtees House which was one of these merchants house in the 16th century. The picture is taken from the road leading onto the Swing Bridge.
