It is believed that there was a gateway at the junction of the nearer cross-field hedge and the main road hedge. According to Ordnance Survey documents a benchmark was levelled at 102.329 feet above Liverpool Datum on a gatepost at this gateway, now long gone, during the 1843/4 Kendal to Carlisle Survey of 1843/4. The surveyor's description was 'No. 359. Mark on East pier of gate, at North side of road ; 4.58 ft. above surface'
