Built on Hermitage Hill, once nurseries and possibly market gardens to feed Edinburgh and Leith, then site of a sandpit. Sandy soils favour vegetable crops as they do today in East Lothian. Younger than Restalrig Terrace which explains the right angles in Restalrig Terrace.
