This shows the sack hoist drive. There is a lever that swings the pinion on top of the vertical shaft into engagement with the gear on the sack hoist shaft. This occurs when the actuating rope is pulled and disengagement is by the action of gravity and and a weight pulling on the rope to disengage. The horizontal wooden casing contains an augur that I think was associated with the milling of oats. This is no longer used.
