Site of the former Beccles Fire Station

It was noted in 1864, that the Fire Engines are at present kept in a shabby, tumble-down place, totally unfit accommodation. A new Engine House including a pump for testing hose on premises should be built at the corner of Wellington Street [now Station Road] next to the Baptist Chapel. Each engine would be, with its hose and buckets ready at a moment’s notice. It was built by 1867, comprising a dwelling house, Masonic Hall & Ante-Room and Fire Engine House, in the occupation of Beccles Corporation. It was later to become a Temperance Hotel eventually Gale's Garage, the engine house became the Station Road entrance with petrol pumps and workshop in the rear, The hotel became the stores and office. Everything was completely demolished in the late 1960s and the present car sales showroom constructed. Image
