This stretch of the B6278 known as Crawleyside Bank is one of the steepest sections of the road as it climbs north from Stanhope. Apparently it's highly regarded as a climb by cyclists. That it's considered a potentially dangerous route is indicated not just by the presence of crash barriers but also the 'escape route' of fine gravel on the far side of the road. In August 1969 a bus crashed descending the road killing 19 people. There's a memorial tablet set into a wall beyond the bend.
