The site of the former Castle Mill

Castle mill was the name awarded to the mill in St George's Road, Beccles, the last surviving of the five Beccles mills. It was originally a tower mill of modest proportions. The mill was bought in 1909, by Walter Green from Essex, who demolished the old mill and built a new steam mill with a large concrete grain silo, and succeeded where all the other mills by this time had closed. 1929 saw Walter's death, his two sons, Stanley and Sidney took over the business, and so it was until 1968 when brother Sidney died, the running of the business fell to the hand of his nephew until 1975 when the mill finally closed. The mill was demolished and Beech Tree Close (pictured) was built in the site. Named after the huge beech tree seen in the picture.
