As the church was only built in the 1890s this is not the remnant of a medieval rood screen, but a revival of the concept. According to Pevsner's guide, it was carved by a Mr Hedley of Newcastle in 1898. It bears the text "If I am lifted up from the Earth I will draw all men unto me".
