The row of cottages, including the Caxton public house are located opposite what is now the fire and police station, Douglas Place was built in 1874 by William Moore then owner of the Caxton Printing Works. He named it after his son, Douglas. Another row of cottages were built on the opposite side of the road beyond the printing works in Newgate, named Dacre Place, after his other son Dacre. These were later demolished when the printing works, later acquired by Wm Clowes & Sons of London, expanded the size of the works. William Moore was later was imprisoned in 1882, given 5 years penal servitude for fraud and unpaid debts. He spent the last years of his life in the workhouse.
