The hospital was built for Beccles Town Council when they decided at a special meeting about 1902 to erect an Isolation Hospital, at a cost of £252 10s, for use in case of a smallpox outbreak in the town. By the end of October 1902, cases of smallpox had appeared in nearly every part of the U.K. with the epidemic continuing into 1903. It is not known whether or not the Isolation Hospital was ever used.
