About 200m southwest off the A7 at Lothianbridge is this original toll cottage once named Dalhousie now Deaflawhill Cottage. Sites like this, just off a main route, would be used to make sure all travellers paid their dues to the Toll Road Trust. There is a small window in the north gable from which the toll keeper could keep a watch. This cottage is marked on the 1845 OS map so will date from the first quarter of the 19C.
