Some websites suggest the 'Lindisfarne Memorial' as the seaward end of the Weardale Way, but locals deny the existence of such a memorial. No mention is made of the Weardale Way here, at Bede's Cross, but Sunderland tends to ignore the Way. The Cross was erected in 1904 as a memorial to the Venerable Bede, who lived in the nearby Monastry of St Peter in the late 7th and early 8th centuries, and is sometimes regarded as the father of english history (ref notice board).
