New build in Combwich

Work has started on creating a new home opposite the village church. A notice on the wall points out that the site is where the ancient chapel of St Leonard used to be, dated 1336-1675. It was the village church and was slowly lost to decay. Finally it was demolished and the remains were carefully kept underground by quarry workers. An application for building was delivered and an archaeological survey revealed the old chapel in 2016. The skeleton of an infant was found, but thought to have been interred after the chapel was levelled. Amongst other causes, St Leonard is patron to women in labour.
