The Icon (Eagle Building)

The Icon, also known as the Eagle Building, was located in Stevenage Old Town. Built in 1989, the building was built for Confederation Life and Betfair and would be used by multiple different companies over the years. The Icon was even used in a TV Episode of Inspector Morse and in a 1994 Ford Transit Van advert. The Icon’s last occupant was TalkTalk before the building became vacant and derelict from September 2015. Unfortunately The Icon has now been demolished, demolition starting in November 2022 and completing in May 2023 as central government overruled Stevenage Borough Council’s decision to keep the building, and decided to demolish it to make way for seven apartment tower blocks up to 16 storeys high, with a total of 576 flats. The Icon’s nickname, the Eagle Building, came from local Stevenage residents, as from a bird’s-eye view the building resembled an eagle shape. Many Stevenage residents were disappointed by the decision for demolition, mainly as the building would only be 34 years old in 2023 and had an iconic glass futuristic structure, making it one of the few nice-looking buildings in Stevenage.
