Pillbox at Avening

This is a WW2 thick walled type 24 pillbox. It is one of three in the immediate area forming part of 'Stop Line Green'. Built in 1940 the stop line formed a continuous defensive position some 100 miles long protecting Bristol from attack from the east. The stretch between Malmesbury and Nailsworth across the Cotswold plateau lacked any natural obstacles to hinder the invader and hence the sequence of pillboxes around Avening.
