Cyr (pronounced 'sire') was a child martyr at the time of the Diocletian persecution in A.D. 303. His mother, Julitta, took him from the mobs but both were captured at Tarsus. The Governor interrogated them; they both defiantly stated their belief in Christ and were murdered for their dedication. Today, the church retains the motto 'I am a Christian too' - Cyr's bold words. Interestingly, old maps frequently record the church as St Cyril's.
