Martin George was a farmer who diversified into commodities including malt. After finding his feet with a small malting house on Quay Street he built these maltings in 1837, with the kiln at the far end of the building. Image Malting operations ceased in 1929 and the building was converted to other uses, eventually the former malting floor was converted into six cottages in 2001. The kiln has retained its original form
