This large pasture, bordering on Ashmanhaugh Plantation, the woodland seen in the background, is populated by a number of piebald and skewbald horses. The term piebald is used to describe animals, especially horses, with a spotting pattern of large white and black patches (seen here). Similarly patterned horses with patches of any other colour besides black (i.e. chestnut, brown, tan) are called skewbald.
