If an advert for canal restoration was needed, the short restored section of the old Wilts & Berks Canal in south Swindon should be a contender. A length of around 2 kilometres has been cleared and rewatered. The towpath is an attractive waterside walk, some beautiful canalside gardens have been created by local residents and a bit further along, the canal is the central feature of a brand new neighbourhood development with pub, shops and apartments.
