Today this red-brick building in a field just off the Guarlford Road appears insignificant, however, work carried out within this humble building during the Second World War was important and no doubt contributed to the allied victory. The building was a TRE (Telecommunications Research Establishment) radio listening post. It was from here that radio signals from the Luftwaffe radar operators were monitored and it was also from here that the first indications of the rocket establishment at Peenemunde became apparent. Later photo reconnaissance was able to confirm the rocket establishment resulting in an RAF bombing raid in August 1943 which destroyed much of the site, thereby setting the rocket programme back some months.
