Durham Castle - Western Range

The Western Range of Durham Castle contains the kitchen and hall with the garden staircase and grand staircase. The hall undercroft dates from the C11th. The hall built for Bishop Bek is C13th, but was extended southwards c.1350 for Bishop Hatfield. The kitchen and buttery were remodelled for Bishop Fox with a hatch dated 1499. The garden staircase in front of the kitchen is C13th with a later link to the hall. The Grand Staircase wing on the right was added 1662 for Bishop Cosin, who also added the porch to the hall. There was restoration and alterations in the C19th.
