The resurfaced track was reopened on the 4 July 2021 bringing the athletics facility into line with new competition standards introduced by UK Athletics in 2019. The facility is home to North Shields Polytechnic Athletics Club, one of the largest athletics clubs in the North East of England with over 650 current members. The club was founded in 1903 as a walking club and today specialises in Track and Field, Road Running, Cross Country, Fell Running and Triathlon.
