Unwary hedgehogs can come to an untimely end if they fall through the bars of a cattle grid. That is why many of them, such as this one Image, are equipped with an escape ramp in the corner. Hopefully itinerant hedgehogs will have the wit to navigate a right-angled bend on the way up. Additionally there are openings in all the underlying girders which aid the same purpose.
