Named in honour of Lt Col George Frederick Spashett (1884 - 1945) born into a fishing family based in Lowestoft. During WW1 he served in the Royal Field Artillery, rising to the rank of Major. He was awarded the Military Cross on 26 July 1918 “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. After WW1 he returned to Lowestoft and became a JP in 1934 and an Alderman in 1937. He was also Vice Consul for Sweden, Germany and Latvia, being decorated with the Distinguished Service Order of the German Eagle in 1938 and the Order of the Three Stars of Latvia also in 1938. He was a steamship owner and broker and was Lloyds Agent for Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth. During WW2 he served in the Quartering Commandant for Lincolnshire with the rank of Lt Colonel. He was killed on active service on 15 September 1943 at the age of 59.
