The centre panel on the left reads: Why Bonds Meadow? Bonds Meadow takes its name from Arthur Harper Bond who owned the land in the early 20th century. A colourful and flamboyant character. Bond was born [in Stepney] on 5th January 1854. Early in 1900 he purchased a part of Pond Farm, Oulton. Arthur purchased the old Pond Farm house (now Ashdale) which became the family home together with the adjacent fields. In 1905 he had laid out what is now Chestnut Avenue and was selling plots of building land there and also having houses constructed himself. Two of his daughter married two of the sons of George Mobbs who lived at Laurel Farm, Oulton half a mile due north of Pond Farm. In 1917 he [Bond] sold the farm and moved to Rookery Farm, Carlton Colville. [now the golf course] Arthur Harper Bond died at Littlehampton on 9th December 1940 at the age of 86. His body was brought back to Carlton Colville and he was buried there with his wife and beside the grave of their youngest daughter, Kathleen, who had died in October 1934. Today this area is public open space of about seven acres.
