The "gote to" reference here is surely the late Percy Hide Reaney's book on Place-Names of Cambridgeshire published in 1943. He tells us that the name is first recorded in 1570. In 1597 it was translated into French (sort of) as Le Quatuor Goates in a map of Wisbech. By 1825 it was Four Gouts (perhaps from the French égout meaning "sewer"?) "This was the meeting place of the four gotes of Wisebeche, Leverington, Newton and Tyd S. Giles". Gote is Middle English for a water channel, "fairly common in the north of the Isle of Ely" (thanks to Tiger for the information).
