The half-timbered property, its facade forming one of the entrances to a large modern shopping mall behind, is not as old as it looks, being built 1909-11 by WT Lockwood for the second Duke of Westminster (whose family name appears here, as in so many other places in the city). According to Pevsner (quoted by Historic England) 'Lockwood intended that this large and ambitious project should be wholly faced in faience; but his client, to whom the City Council's Improvement Committee expressed their pleasure and thanks, demurred, insisting on timber framing'. Out guide told a slightly different story about it actually having been built with a stone front before the Duke insisted on a change of material. Listed Grade II* (list entry 1376077).
