Named in honour of Sir Alfred Gibbs Bourne KCIE FRS FLS DSc who was born in Lowestoft (1859 - 1940). He was the son of Rev. Alfred Bourne, secretary of the British Foreign School Society, and he joined the University College School after a liberal home education.
