The Market Place is the heart of Cirencester, dominated by the tower of St John the Baptist's church. As Corinium, Cirencester was a major Roman town and trading centre where three roads met; its importance continued into medieval times with the establishment of an Augustinian abbey in 1117 behind where the church stands now. Today Cirencester styles itself the capital of the Cotswolds.
