The public footpath follows the route of the Wilts & Berks canal. The newish development of flats is called 'The Moorings' and was built on the site of a canalside builders yard. The Wilts & Berks canal opened in 1810, linking the Kennet & Avon canal with the River Thames and running right through Swindon. It closed in 1914, but in the 1920s was still in water, home to frogs, newts, ducks and a range of insects. The canal is now partly restored.
