Looking across Midland Road to the premises of W. W. Winter. This is probably the oldest continuously working photographic business in the country and possibly the world. The building shown opened in 1867 as a photographic studio and has operated continuously since then. The studio was designed specifically for photography and the processing of the images and has never been lived in. Originally there were roof lights on this roughly north west facing roof as this was before electrical lighting and everything had to be carried using daylight. The business started in 1852 on the opposite side of the road not in the photo. It is now an Indian restaurant.
