The old bank on Wells Road in Totterdown was built in the very late nineteenth century, replacing a row of houses. As part of the construction, this elegant carved stonework features a beehive emblem. The bank was a Lloyd's branch; although the modern emblem is a horse, the original was a beehive. John Bland, a goldsmith, founded his company with the black horse in 1728. In 1884, Bland’s firm (which was by then known as Barnetts, Hoares & Co) was taken over by Lloyds Bank and the horse was taken up.
