The twenty-one lock flight* down to Aldersley Junction (with the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal) starts here, and the Birmingham Canal Navigation main line continues behind the camera as far as the three Smethwick Locks at Sandwell, then into Birmingham. The buildings by the lock included a lock keeper's cottage as well as a toll house. The locks lower the water level by 132 feet (40 metres) about one and three quarter miles (2·8 km). Little's Lane Bridge is below the lock. * Originally there were just twenty locks, the current No 21 being the original No 20 but a deep one, which caused difficulty and delays. An extra lock was inserted (current No 20) and the original made into No 21, much shallower and quicker to work.
