This is on an old crossroads, shown on Thomas Jeffreys's map of Yorkshire, 1771. The inscribed date is probably 1764. The 1850 six-inch map does not show the stone, and the late 19C 1:2500 map shows'GP', which is probably a tall finger-post rather than this stone. However it is in the correct position for the destinations shown.
