The north side of the Sturge monument, representing peace, features an anxious-looking woman bearing symbols of peace, a dove and an olive branch, with a third, a lamb, reclining at her feet. Sturge was active in attempts to promote international peace, including a visit by Quakers to Tsar Nicholas I in St Petersburg in 1854 in an unsuccessful attempt to avert war in the Crimea.
