Deep among the old steps and houses that form an irregular gathering at the end of World's End Lane is a rather odd sight. The White Hart Steps are a narrow, jumbled and restless flight that takes people down from the upper parts of Cliftonwood to where St Peter's church used to stand (it was demolished in 1939). The backs of the houses look onto the steps and create a close neighbourhood. However, there is no prospect of a bus ever reaching this stop so it must be assumed to be a piece of local humour. Indeed, the sign comes from Hotwell Road.
